Saturday, 8th March 7:30 pm 2025 — Nantwen Ensemble.

The programme will include Schubert String Quintet in C Major, D. 956, completed in 1828—the year of his death, String Quintet by acclaimed Welsh composer John Metcalf and Verses by Ólafur Arnalds.

The Nantwen Ensemble is a group of professional musicians enabling community performance and the creation and performing of Welsh Chamber music. Originally from Pembrokeshire, Daniel Davies studied cello at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School. He also had a series of masterclasses with the acclaimed Hungarian cellist Janos Starker. Daniel is a passionate chamber musician and currently works as artistic director of Nantwen Music where he performs in an annual festival of string chamber music with a focus on Welsh Classical Composers.

John Metcalf was born in Swansea, Wales in 1946. A joint UK/Canadian citizen, he is one of the foremost composers working in Wales today. His composing career has already embraced a large variety of work including seven operas, two to commission from Welsh National Opera. https://johnmetcalf.co.uk

Ólafur Arnalds, born 3 November 1986) is an Icelandic multi-instrumentalist and producer from Mosfellsbær, Iceland. He mixes strings and piano with loops and beats, a sound ranging from ambient/electronic to atmospheric pop. (wikipedia)

A consummate guitarist, Will’s technical brilliance is matched with an innate and versatile musicality. At home with reggae collectives, gypsy jazz virtuosos or heavy metal riff merchants, Will’s playing always shines with its formidable prowess yet deft touch, and his infectious ability to whip up a fervour. He can effortlessly and delicately put his hand to the most technical solo guitar pieces, or rip it up with super-funky soul inspired groove. His versatility and virtuosity combine to produce solos with unpredictable excitement, as he draws from his rich palate of influences.
